New WordPress themes in 2022

I’ve been tracking the number of themes tagged as Full Site Editing since the beginning of the year.

While there are several new block themes being added each month there are many more traditional PHP themes being published to wordpress.org.

So far this year the number of traditional themes added is nearly 7 times that of block based themes developed for the Site Editor. I don’t know why this is the case. It’s just a fact.

These charts display the increase in themes from January 2022

  • The line chart shows the accumulated figures for themes created this year. Note: The Total includes the block based themes.
  • The next two bar charts show the estimates of the block based and total themes on the first of each month.
  • The tables show the raw data from which the first day of month estimates were calculated. This raw data is needed for future updates.
